The Ugly Side of Lead Generation

Today I am having a guest blogger, Ricky Breslin, take over and discuss his specialty – lead generation. I love Ricky’s approach as it is very much like my own; no-nonsense and full of real examples instead of posting theories.

Theories suck.

Take it away Ricky …

Want to see the inside of actual lead generation campaigns, using real money, with a nice pretty little picture? I know, this will be really weird considering that people never use real numbers and only talk about fictitious “businesses” they run and how successful they are.

Not All Advice is Good Advice

Okay, let’s have a little fun this morning. While this clip is totally awesome, it also proves that bad advice is everywhere. Know your source before you take action and always, always, always see Penn and Teller whenever you’re in Vegas!

Facebook Questions: Because Your Friends Want to Know

Facebook has a new feature, Facebook Questions, which it envisions as being a valued place where people can get advice and product recommendations from friends and other members (blah blah blah). I know what you’re thinking—the web does not need another Yahoo! Answers. But hey, if Q&A sites like Aardvark, TripAdviser, and Quora are utilizing the Facebook network why shouldn’t Facebook?

Facebook Questions isn’t up yet, but below is an example of what it will look like. Facebook describes it as a cross between Yahoo! Answers and LinkedIn Answers, but as you can see from the image below, answers can reach Wikipedia-length proportions.

Father’s Day Revisited …

My Dad & I at my sister's wedding in 2000.

My Dad & I at my sister’s wedding in 2000.

My father passed away during the summer of 2003 and I find it hard to believe it has been nearly seven years. It seems like a lot longer than that. A lot has changed since my father died. My youngest son David was born, I’ve relocated to North Carolina and I have found peace in my life. There have been times that I’ve been happy in my life, but I can honestly say that right now, I’m the happiest I’ve been in my life. And what mostly sucks is he isn’t here to share it with.

Bing an Option on iPhone

Apple announced today at WWDC 2010 that Bing is now a search option for iPhone users. Presently, Google is the default search engine, but users can change that to Yahoo! via settings. As was just announced Bing has entered the mix, which will be of further interest to those targeting a mobile market.

BTW, the iPhone 4 release has been announced (June 15 for preorders).

Many of you are familiar with Associated Content which is a media site driven by freelance written content. Freelancers can either submit their content, images, audio, slideshows, or video at no cost and get paid for page views, or take on paid assignments.

How to Attract Qualified Traffic

Targeted Keyword Research

Targeted Keyword Research

Let’s say you’re a real estate investor who buys homes for cash in Las Vegas, Nevada and you’ve optimized a new website for the phrase “cash for homes” because you want “tons of leads daily.” Well, you achieve that. You spend a good portion of your day sorting through tons of leads daily–from people all over the world. So now you’re asking yourself, why aren’t people in Las Vegas contacting me? Well, are you targeting people with homes in Las Vegas?

The more you target your web traffic, the more qualified that traffic becomes. Focus on towns, zip codes, and situations specific to your market. Don’t confuse the number of SERPs or daily searches with conversions! Those general trophy phrases are not going to bring the targeted visitors you need to convert traffic.

Random Questions …

Here are some questions which were posed to me recently …

1) In my experience, pinging is only for purpose of page indexing rather than getting backlinks, do you have similar experience or I am wrong?

I only use pinging for getting indexed. In terms of backlinks, you might be confusing “trackbacks” which have long been used as a form of “spam” to get backlinks.

2) I wonder where the new WordTracker get their data from? I do not think is from metacrwaler anymore. The new data counts look suspicious.

Pandora, AMEX Fail

This isn’t an SEO post, but I have to go on a rant here because, well, I am blown away that companies continue to be “short sighted” even in a recession.

I went to upgrade my Pandora subscription (online streaming music) so it would be ad-free only to discover that they dont’ take the American Express card. Seriously? In this economy you are going to have a barrier to entry? Make doing business with you difficult? Unreal.

Basic Steps for SEO

Basic Steps for SEO

Being on the front page of some of the top-rated search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! is no joke as it can skyrocket your business online. With too many websites trying to cover the same content with only a difference in presentation and optimization and making their portals more search-friendly, the competition is stiff indeed. However, that doesn’t mean you should take a backseat.

Porn? Um, no, I’m not Surfing Porn. Why Would You Think That?!?!

77 How to Look at Porn on a Plain - And Look Very Suspicious

Okay, let’s face it, there are just some really weird and creepy people in this world, and for some reason, when it came to getting “common sense” … well, they were down the hall pounding on the side of the vending machine.

Perfect.

This guy, well, he is just an idiot. I would love to tell you I took this picture. It reminds me of when I worked at WordPerfect and company policy stated that you couldn’t look at porn at work because your co-workers may think it was offensive, so this guy drapes a blanket over his cubicle so no one can see the porn on his screen.
