Google: Hard Facts About Comment Spam

Google just came out with some straight forward talk about Blog Comment Spam. Yes, this is a problem as if you own a blog you get comment spam on a regular basis. One WordPress plugin which is really helpful is the Spam Karma plugin. What I like about it is not only does it protect you from Spam comments, but if some get through, a simple click of the “spam” option blocks that domain from posting again.

Nice.

Google Banning AdWords Accounts

Google has been getting aggressive recently banning AdWords accounts and many are wondering how to go about asking for reinclusion back in. Well, in a word, don’t waste your time, it isn’t going to happen.

Yeah ... this seems like a good time for a break ...

Yeah ... this seems like a good time for a break ...

See this building? That’s your business. See the firefighter? That’s Google. Stop being naive. if you break the advertising rules and get banned, you get banned. Period. No amount of whining is going to change that.

“Breadcrumbs” Appearing in Google SERPs

This change has been needed for awhile, and hats off to Google for finally implementing it. Many sites have LONG URLs and it would make the SERPs, well, look messy. Now, if the URL is long, Google will use “Breadcrumb Navigation” instead. Here is a screen shot. Notice the breadcrumb navigation in green:

Google Webmaster Tools Updated

Google Webmaster Tools did a recent update and added some new cool features.

Here are some screen shots:

Google Webmaster Tools Keyword Feature Update

Here are the main issues:

1) They are going to be updating the keyword data daily, which is about time.
2) How often on your site Google found a particular keyword.
3) Display of URLs which have the keyword associated.

One benefit from these new add-ons is that you can discover evidence that your site has been hacked if you have “casino” or “viagra” keywords appearing in the list. But mostly, you can use the new data to highly focus on keywords which are “on the edge” of performing well for your site.

Google Caffeine Injection

Ever since the “Sandbox” of Google Caffeine closed there have been rumors of when Google Caffeine would go live. For me, it can’t come soon enough as we dominate the rankings in the new Caffeine system. Matt Cutts, in the Search Engine Smackdown at Webmaster World, which was a disappointing session, stated that Caffeine would not be launched until AFTER the holiday season. He just didn’t mention which holiday.

The rollout should occur during the “dead week” between Christmas and New Years.

Schwarzenegger’s Coded Message in Veto Letter

This happened about two weeks ago, so it is “old” news, but I just heard about it today and couldn’t let it pass without making a comment on it. Supposedly, this made it on the front page of Google News.

Arnold sends a "message".

As Forrest Gump would say, “…and that’s all I have to say about that.”

PubCon: Hot Topics in the Affiliate Space

I was a speaker at PubCon today for a session on affiliate marketing.

PubCon: Hot Topics in the Affiliate Space

PubCon: Hot Topics in the Affiliate Space

I always struggle when speaking on affiliate marketing as it is what I do that supports 80% of my business. What do you share? What do you keep private? It is a hard line to walk.

So, what I decided to do was give the same type of advice I received at PubCon over four years ago that really jump-started my campaigns. It wasn’t that I had to get smarter, I just had to DO stuff. Stop the whining, the bitching and the moaning and just get stuff done. It worked.

If you’d like a great summary of my presentation, Lisa Barone over at OutSpoken Media, did a great write-up.

I’ll have more about PubCon tomorrow. The three hour time difference is still messing with me.

Arrival in Vegas for PubCon (Webmaster World)

Just checked into the Trump Towers for PubCon ‘09 in Vegas. First time staying at the Trump Towers and the killer room was dampened by the loud horns of the train just a block away. I hate when that happens. On the flight in, I got the first class upgrade on Delta and since we had the “big” plane, it had the new seats that recline all the way back into a bed. Very nice.

Going to grab something to eat, watch football, and get ready for Webmaster World!

Sitelinks Appearing in AdWords

Search Engine Roundtable reported today that Google has now gone live with Sitelinks in AdWords. Here is a screenshot:

Not all of my campaigns have this option. According to Barry, “To see if you have it, go to Campaign Settings tab — it would appear as “Show additional links to my site” under the “Ad extensions” section.” For more information see Google’s FAQ page.
