Marketing Your Content

It isn’t enough just to write good content, you also have to market it. But how? I use the power of Blogs. You see, my experience has shown that people want to be served. They would rather have content delivered to them than have to go out and search for it.

Search = Work

RSS feeds and other ways of delivering content on the web today looked like a clear answer. After all, webmasters can sit back and have the content dumped in their laps in minutes without having to think about what they want and go looking for it. Sounds good, but I have talked to the big bloggers in many industries and their biggest gripe is all the SPAM that is sent to them via RSS. One blogger mentioned that he was getting so much SPAM through RSS that he just killed the feeds. “It was to the point that I was getting ten SPAM articles for every legit one.” It’s too much work to go through.

What should you do instead?

From those I spoke with, they only rely on a few key outlets for their content. I suggest you find the main bloggers in your space (Google Blogsearch).

Read their blog. Get to know it.

Then post comments that are good and insightful. Use your real name or a pen name, but leave a full name. Don’t post your site as a way to get some free “links”. Don’t “kiss up” either. If you disagree with what the blogger said, say so and back it up. Contrary to popular believe, nobody likes a “kiss a$$” so don’t do it. If the Blogger really knows their stuff, and you come up with a counter point that is well thought out and delivered, that will get their attention. Once you feel you have their attention, call them. Tell them why you like their Blog. Be direct and to the point. Then, get down to business.

What To Do:

First, don’t ask for a favor from them. You provide the favor. Tell them you would like to sponsor their Blog, or advertise on their Blog. That will open up the conversation. They may ask what site you want to advertise, and once you tell them, they will know you are in a similar space. PayPal them the money right then, don’t wait. If they are being receptive, ask for them to review one of your articles (it must be killer and reflect the same well-thought out approach of the comments you made on their Blog). But make sure they understand you aren’t asking for the article to be posted, just commentary with a link to your article.

Do you see the power of this yet?

It’s coming. Once you do this with the top 3-4 Bloggers, the secondary Bloggers, who follow the top Bloggers like puppy dogs, will pick up the article as well, and they will do the same thing … they will comment on it and link to your article. Using Digg and the other “Social Bookmarking” tools is fine … but you won’t even come close to getting the same amount of quality traffic as going direct to the top Bloggers.

Why?

Because they control the quality traffic on the web right now.

Let me repeat that: Top Bloggers Control the Quality Traffic on the Web.

Think about that statement for a moment. It isn’t the QUANTITY of traffic, it is the QUALITY of traffic. If someone you trust recommends a source, you are going to at least check it out aren’t you? You will also be more willing to spend more time on that site and really look into it, wouldn’t you? Of course. That is human nature.

Here is the kicker: If you sell a product or service, make sure the Blogger understands that you track all sales and if any sales are the result of his/her traffic, you will personally see to it that they are paid an affiliate commission for that customer for life. Yes, life. Make it worthwhile for them.

As my grandfather would always say, “Take care of the people who take care of you.”

Build and nurture these relationships and you will see great things happen for your promotions. Here are some actual stats that were achieved by getting three top bloggers to post their opinion on an article I wrote:

* Blogger One: 1,015 uniques
* Blogger Two: 345 uniques
* Blogger Three: 156 uniques
* Total Uniques to Page: 2,551

In just 30 days, 432 links were acquired. While most of those links will not be counted in Google’s new measurement, that is still an excellent achievement.

If we placed each unique visitor at a cost of 30 cents per and each link acquired at $2.50, this is our “projected benefit” from this campaign:

* Uniques: 2,551 * $0.30 = $765.30
* Links: 432 * $2.50 = $1,080.00
* Total = $1,845.30

This figure represents what it would have cost to deliver the traffic and getting the links. In other words, I can use that $1,800.00 for something else. Remember, all the links acquired are one-way links. That is a nice added bonus. And link builders, even those overseas, can charge up to $8.00 for each one-way link.

This technique gets better. Look at the referrers in your log files. Start at the top and work your way down. Those who are sending you the most traffic are those you want to contact first. Look at their site and/or their blog. Is this someone you want to do business with? To promote you? To advertise with?

Based on your needs and goals, you can decide if you want to continue and contact them. Remember that just because the page is a PageRank0 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t contact them. There could be an issue with the site, the Blog being new, or the owner not understanding how to get their site indexed. You would be surprised how many Bloggers don’t understand fundamental Internet Marketing. If they don’t, offer to help them in that area in return for their help to promote your business with their readers. It’s a win-win.

As you go through the list of referrers, your goal is to expand your own “PR Distribution List”. You have the top three Bloggers on your list, now you want to expand into the secondary level. While the secondary Bloggers tend to have a very small fraction of the readership the big Bloggers do, they are worth contacting. If you expand your circle to include 40-50 Bloggers, when you have your next great article, you have a distribution list that will give you immediate quality traffic … plus, you’ll get some great incoming links to boot.

If you are struggling with qualified traffic and getting solid links, this approach can breathe life back into your site.

Google Toolbar PageRank Update Underway

Matt Cutts mentioned a few days ago that we could see a PageRank update as early as this weekend and it is underway. As usual, the update is a snapshot from about three weeks earlier, and this update falls right in line with that time frame.

I’m not seeing any huge changes, but it seems clear that Google did “expand” their requirements for each level as many large, popular sites, such as Webmaster World, dropped a point in PageRank.

For my sites, there was very little movement on the home pages, the movement which was significant was on the internal pages, which is right where you want it. While many have claimed in forums to being “grey barred” with their internal pages, I’m not seeing it.

I’ve been saying for years to stop the “Green Bar Addiction” as PageRank really isn’t a metric that is a good indicator of your site’s health in your market. What matters is traffic and conversion. I agree with Leslie Rohde when he calls PageRank “For Entertainment Purposes Only”.

In short, don’t put much weight on PageRank. Even Matt Cutts clarified the issue:

Even if you don’t show much PageRank, Google still has 200+ other signals we use in our ranking. It’s definitely common to see lower-PageRank sites ranking above higher-PageRank sites–which tends confuses the people who obsess too much about PageRank and who don’t focus on other factors that search engines might use to rank pages.

It has been rumored that this update is an all-out attack on paid links. Not true according to my data. If your PageRank went down, no need to panic, as it is not a key factor in how Google ranks pages. Webmasters who panic often make poor decisions. Concentrate on traffic and conversions. That’s what puts food on the table.

“ACPI.SYS is Corrupt” Using VMWare Fusion

I was doing an install of Windows XP on my new MacBook Pro when I encountered the famous “Blue Screen” with an error: APCI.SYS is Corrupt.

All the forums about the subject have a ton of conflicting advice. Let me share with you what fixed it for me.

The error occurs when you set your Virtual Machine in VMWare Fusion as Read/Write. You have to create a new Virtual Machine and set it to Read Only. Windows will then install on Leopard without incident.

Seven Deadly Sins of Social Media

Bruce Clay had a good article in his newsletter about the key mistakes companies make in Social Media Marketing.

The article was longer than it needed to be. Basically, here is my take on the “Deadly Sins” of Social Media:

1) Thinking Social Media is a place to sell products or services. It isn’t. Use it to create a buzz to create the “thirst” for your product or service.

2) Create / Join / Steer Conversations. Social Media is all about conversations. If you can create, join or steer a conversation, you will create a positive “buzz” about your product or service.

3) Using Social Media Marketing as a “Link Farm.” It is just bad taste and it will do a lot of harm and damage to your company’s reputation. Use it for its intent … to create a buzz in the market.

4) Spamming by Outsourcing. Many overseas companies will Spam with Social Media and post profiles with very little, if any, real content. Choppy copy and sentence structure which reads so poorly you would think words were left out.

5) Lurk and Ask Questions. Often by not showing your presence as a company and just “lurking” in conversations, only asking questions when it is needed, you can learn a lot of what customers in the market want. More importantly, you can find out what their stresses are, focus your pitch on the solution and then target potential searches to gather additional prospects.

6) Once You Start, Stay Committed. Nothing is worse than arriving in a community that is dead. If your are going to be involved in Social Media, give it a real commitment.

7) Don’t Expect Instant Success. This is a learning process, no matter your industry. Take it slow and realize you’re going to make mistakes. If you want to learn more on effective Social Media Marketing, the best course I know is Howie Schwartz’ Conversation Domination.

“Just Write Good Content…”

This is one of the biggest lies in Internet Marketing. Yeah, that’s right, lies.

You see, just writing content isn’t enough…you have to actually MARKET the content. What a concept, huh? Unfortunately what has happened in the IM space is “rockstars” like Matt Cutts from Google, who has great intentions in the market, but his suggestions are taken literally.

The result?

Content is written, really good content, and it is posted on the site or blog…and the owner then sits on their hands and just waits for links to just “appear” to the page and they start rolling around on a big pile of money.

That isn’t reality.

You see, old fashioned “grass roots marketing” is needed in order to get your message out when you sell a product, and there is no difference with content.

Content is your product. Market it effectively and be as aggressive as you need to be to get the results you want.

Next week I’ll cover some of my favorite techniques to market my content.

Best of the Web Rescuing DMOZ?!?!

ShoeMoney reported this on Friday, and I am really hoping that it does. Best of the Web, one of my favorite directories is in talks to acquire DMOZ.

Over the last several years there have been a lot of editors leaving DMOZ and oddly enough, they have been hired by BOTW. One issue that a lot of Webmasters don’t know is Google’s Business Directory is nothing more then “duplicate content” from DMOZ.

Right now AOL holds the rights to DMOZ. Let’s hope this deal goes through soon.

Microsoft (Live.com) Adds Features to Local Listings

If you haven’t already done so, and you think Microsoft has enough market share to make it worth your while, add your business to their Local Listing Center, as it is the only way to make it into their Live Search Maps feature.

They have made some updates and added new features. Here is a partial list:

* Added Parking Options multi-select control on the Edit Listing page to enable user to select various parking options.

* Added Reservation URL and Menu URL in the Category properties page. The user will be able to specify reservation URL for hotels and menu URL for restaurant.

* Added a warning to the Edit Listing page for YPC paid listings. This will alert the user that the listing he has entered is also contributed by YPC and some his data may be overwritten by YPC data.

* Modified the enumerations as provided by the content team.

* For advertisement listings i.e. the listings that does not have postal code or city. If the user tried to edit such listings he/she will be redirect to the standard error page. This functionality will not allow user to edit the advertisement listings.

Yahoo! Site Explorer Link Update

A couple of days ago Yahoo! updated their link counts in their very cool Site Explorer tool. A lot of webmasters were reporting HUGE drops in their link numbers, so I ran reports on all of my domains. The results?

An average drop of 18% in the reported number of links. My main site, Web Marketing Now, saw a drop of 4,000 links (from 25,000 to 21,000).

Yahoo! just did an algorithm update, and while this probably has nothing to do with that update, I have looked at what the changes could be and I’m not seeing any consistency in the types of links which were dropped. There is speculation that Yahoo! is no longer counting certain types of links and removed “nofollow” type of links, but that is just pure speculation at this point.

The bottom line is, there was an adjustment, and Yahoo! doesn’t have enough market share organically to really cause too much stress over this.

Jerry West is Stomping the Search Engines … for Free?!?!

STOMPING THE SEARCH ENGINES 2.0

The first thing that I would like to start off with today is a big thank you. Not only for being one of my readers but mostly I appreciate the level of faith and trust you put in me – and for continuing to be a part of it.

By now you’ve probably been hit with a few (or a few dozen) emails about Stomping the Search Engines 2 … the sequel to Brad Fallon and Andy Jenkins’ high successful audio course they put out four years ago. They were gracious enough to allow me to be a part of the sequel and I’m pretty excited about it.

While going through all the content it was really weighing on me that the Internet has become such an over populated wasteland of over hyped products. Most of which are designed to do nothing more than do you the colossal favor of picking your pocket of your hard earned money.

I hate that.

It frustrates me to no end that when I have a solid recommendation to offer my reader’s odds are high that you’ve already been burned by a recommendation. Most likely it was from someone who was little more than a scammer that had nothing more to offer than an affiliate profit – for their own wallet.

And that’s when it really hit me – you don’t feel that way about what I have to say or you wouldn’t even be reading this.

Pretty humbling….
So – thank you!

As you already know, I’ve had the privilege of a long-time working relationship with Andy Jenkins and Brad Fallon of StomperNet fame, and I’ve been a card carrying faculty member of StomperNet Online University for a nearly two years now (that’s 18 years in Internet years ;o).

(If you’re new to Internet Marketing and wondering who these guys are, I have more background on them AND some startling revelations about how they got their start coming to you in future issues.)

I’m writing this because we are just hours away from the release of Stomping the Search Engines 2 – and I want to give you a fair shot at being a part of something that simply cannot be missed. And – although I’m sworn to secrecy about some parts of the release – I’m determined to reveal as much as I can so that when the count down stops and the selling begins, my readers understand this product well enough to be the first ones in line! It’s a call out sick from work, hire a baby sitter – even make up with your mother-in-law if you have to – kind of opportunity.

Scratch the mother-in-law thing – some things are better left alone.

STSE 2.0 is the follow-up to Stomping the Search Engines, which became a best seller within days of its release in 2004 and went on to become the most widely used search engine marketing courses ever. Andy and Brad then went on to create one of the most comprehensive – and ultimately valuable – membership sites ever created. It’s not often that you hear of a membership site that costs $800.00 a month that people just can’t bring themselves to leave.

The original version of STSE was pure audio with transcripts and proved to be the ultimate brain dump by Andy and Brad of everything that was working for them.

True to their nature, they were unable to rest until they’d figured out a way to create the next revolution in Internet Marketing (and to find some crazy way to top themselves). I’m telling you, these guys are simply not content to being an important part of a revolution; they’re determined to be the inventors behind it!

As I’d mentioned before, I’m already on the faculty at StomperNet so I wasn’t too terribly surprised when they started brainstorming with me about what they had planned for STSE2.

For starters, they were going to use a DVD format to make sure that the material played to every learning style and included visuals designed for impact. Then, instead of limiting their readers to benefiting from just their own knowledge and experience, they were also going to be putting together some of the most brilliant minds in Internet Marketing in the most important areas of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). These experts were going to be given the opportunity to really drill the StomperNet readers in their particular area of expertise. Here is the kicker…they wanted to know if I would mind being one of those experts?

Mind? Mind being called “brilliant” by two of the most successful marketers on the planet? Are you kidding me?

Takes a little getting used to? Yes. Feels a little strange? Definitely. Jump at the opportunity to use what I know to help people? Absolutely!

We’ve all come together to offer our expertise in one of the most tightly woven curriculums for Internet Marketer’s that I’ve ever seen. We use video training that plays to every style of learning. There’s an introductory module to make sure you’ve got the basics covered, and then the in depth training builds until you’re working to develop an aggressive marketing strategy for a six figure income!

Now most of you already know me well enough to know that I’m already like “stupid generous” with giving away what I know for free, so you KNOW that I’ve pulled out all the stops and done everything I can to hotwire straight into your brain they key elements of SEO for the ultimate jump start. I’ve turned myself inside out to knock the chocks out from under your wheels and give you the nitro bump of the century.

And I’m just one module out of over a half dozen.

Even I feel kind of a need to say “Wow!” here…

How much? Stomping the Search Engines 2 is going for a price that would have me almost blushing with shame to purchase this baby at…Free.

No, I didn’t stutter. All you need to do is pay for the shipping and handling.

And if I’m wrong about this product – here’s my personal guarantee: I will double your money back for the shipping and handling – personally. A: it’s THAT affordable! (total understatement of the year, here!) and B: it’s that awesome!

You startin’ to feel the rock your world nature of what I’m talking about here?

If you wait, you’re just going to have to cross your fingers and hope their server will be able to handle the load.

Watch this video directly from Andy and Brad

Here is more specific information on what to expect!
