Google Website Optimizer

While this was announced about two weeks ago and we signed up first thing, we have heard NOTHING back from Google since then. Check would what Google is saying:

Google: “Over the coming weeks we’ll be testing a new tool called the Website Optimizer that can help you find out which content will convert best on your site. Whether you define a conversion as a purchase or a newsletter sign-up, Website Optimizer allows you to experiment with different headlines, copy, and images on your site in order to find out which combination results in the most conversions. You can use this tool on your landing page or any page that represents a conversion.

You can sign up and hopefully you will have more luck than us.

Yahoo! Update

First of all, it looks like there is a “weather report” over at Yahoo! that discusses some changes and I am seeing an 11% increase in traffic from Yahoo! already today. Just so you know, the terms “weather report” started a few years ago to alert the webmaster community of changes to filters and/or algorithms. In terms of what was changed, it is still too early to tell, but all the top rankings for my affiliate programs have gone unchanged … and the number of pages indexed is about the same. So, trying to guess what is different would be just that: a guess. Yahoo! now complies with the NO ODP tag. You can use either of the following tags to stop Yahoo! from using the ODP (if your site is fortunate enough to be in there) titles:

or

For clarification for new users, “Slurp” is the name for Yahoo!’s bot. It is the old Inktomi bot and Yahoo! bought Inktomi a few years ago.

Archived Search Engine News – June 1, 2000

Here is more, check out Google’s info … doubled their market share in just a couple of months. This was one month before they took over the secondary search results at Yahoo!.

AltaVista – Now indexing pages in less than two weeks. When submitting, make sure that AltaVista spiders your page in less than one second (listed on the confirmation page). If it takes longer, we suggest that you resubmit your page the following day.

Excite – On May 29th, we noticed that many of our clients were dropped from Excite. We suggest you check your listing in Excite and resubmit if you’re no longer listed.

Google – Has nearly doubled their market share over the last two months. Make sure you are listed with them.

Infoseek – Actively indexing pages. According to Planet Ocean, the best way to get into their index is to submit via the Go Guides.

LookSmart – Has officially discontinued their free listing service. They are being dropped by our manual listing service.

Lycos – Was just purchased by Terra Networks for $12.5 billion in stock. The new name is “Terra Lycos”.

Nov. 1, 2000 Search Engine News

In clearing out some Supplemental pages on our site, I ran across this. It is amazing that this was just six years ago. How the market has changed. Of the engines discussed, only Google remains (Inktomi doesn’t count). :-)

Search Engine Update

AltaVista – Has joined the “GoTo.com” affiliate network. They display the Top 3 results from GoTo at the bottom of their search results. These results normally appear in Green with the “Sponsors Listings” title.

Excite – We have seen their spider active on many of our servers but we have seen no new pages updated in their index.

HotBot – They joined as a “GoTo.com” affiliate in November.

Google – Just posted an update and have been actively spidering sites. If you aren’t receiving the bulk of your traffic from Google, you should resubmit your pages.

Infoseek – The executives at Go.com obviously are looking for a revenue stream, but forgot that you have to have a good product before people will buy. Go actually believes it can hop on the “paid listing” wagon and charge $199 like Yahoo! and LookSmart. With less than 2% market share we advise to steer clear.

Inktomi – Has launched a “pay to be spidered” program. Terry Plank, CEO of The Academy of Web Specialists highly recommends the service as part of your overall search engine strategy.

Lycos – Joined the “GoTo.com” family in November. They are displaying GoTo listings at the top of their search results. They display under “Featured Listings”.

Yahoo! Update/Fixes

Yahoo! continues to make tweaks to their algorithm/filters … and making mistakes in the meantime. The major issues have been resolved and it looks like things are back in line.

Google Supplemental Results Increasing

Over the last week we are seeing an increase of the Google Supplemental Results of 18% across the domains we track. If you are seeing a rise, don’t panic, as it is normal rise. Now, what is causing this rise is unknown, but as Google makes major shifts every year about this time, it could be a preparation of the next update.

Back from Vegas

I’m back from Vegas and Queensryche is still echoing in my ears … went to the concert at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay with a group of marketers including Keith Baxter. Hands down one of the best shows I have ever been to. Found out later that I had met the “infamous” (Three Amigos) Collin McDougal who wrote the VEO report. I think that must be one of the worst marketing reports and “mindcrime” that has recently been released. We are going to have our full review of that report in the next day or two … I just need some quiet time to get it out.

When Anti-Spyware Goes Wrong

In our testing, we don’t just test the algorithms and search engine optimization methodologies, we also test software. One thing that I love to do is install and then uninstall and see what happens. I installed StopZilla, a leader in anti-spyware for a few days, let it work its “magic” and then I did the uninstall. After the uninstall, I got a pop-up asking me why I uninstalled their product. I filled out the form and submitted and was immediately redirected to GoToMyPC signup page.

Hmmm.

So, went online and used their “live chat” support and told them what happened. Their response? That it wasn’t normal and I must have had some Spyware on my machine so when I uninstalled StopZilla my machine was no longer protected, thus, the popup occurred.

Is it just me or was your software supposed to keep the Spyware off my machine in the first place? If you are looking for a Spyware program, you may want to steer clear of StopZilla. Something isn’t quite right.

New Google Supplemental Hack

The old hack to see all the pages in the Supplemental Index stopped working about two weeks ago, but there is a new string that makes it work again.

site:www.domain.com *** -view

Many SEOs feel that Google changed things on purpose so the hack would no longer work. Seriously, I think Google has better things to do with their time. As a former software tester, it was common when a bug was fixed for 5-7 new bugs to spring up. That is just how software is … and the Google algorithm is software. Remember that.

Software does strange things sometimes.

Mindcrime: Top Ranking in Google in Three Days

I ran across this article by Mark Flavin. Essentially, more hype without any backing. You can check out the article and my comments. Everyone who knows how Google operates that you can’t get a top ranking in three days.

I hate the hype.

Search Engine Market Share from 1999

In doing some “Spring Cleaning” this fall on my web server, I ran across an old newsletter I wrote and quoted Danny Sullivan. Here is the search engine market share back then … August of 1999.

Northern Light: 16%
AltaVista: 15.5%
Inktomi (Snap): 15.5%
Inktomi (HotBot): 11.3%
Inktomi (MSN Search): 8.5%
Infoseek: 8.0%
Google: 7.8%
Inktomi (Yahoo): 7.4%
Excite: 5.6%
Lycos: 2.5%
Euroseek: 2.2%

My favorite is Google at 7.8%. What an infant!

Supplemental Results Gone Wild

Many gurus out there are stating that Google is throwing more and more pages in the Supplemental Index. There is a reason why pages go into the Supplemental Index. In an article only for subscribers of the SEO Revolution, I cover it top to bottom.
