Google Update: Florida (Conclusion)

Through extensive testing that I have done, it is clear that Google has taken and “anti-SEO” approach to their algorithm. Due to this, they have creating a filter which will remove heavily optimized sites from the SERPs. Google’s reliance on PageRankâ„¢ to grade the authority of pages has led to the wholesale trading and buying of links with the primary purpose of influencing rankings on Google rather than for natural linking reasons. But what did Google really expect would happen when they released their Toolbar with the PageRank information included?

Obviously, they didn’t expect the rash of link popularity companies to sprout up overnight and fill its index with spam links in attempt to manipulate their algorithm. In some instances, webmasters would not link to sites unless they thought it would benefit them for Google.

Optimizing your site for Google consisted mainly of ensuring your page had your primary search phrase placed in all appropriate places on your page (the “on page” factors) and that your keyword phrase was inserted in the anchor text of your incoming links (the “off page” factors).

This update was an attempt to penalize sites that were “too relevant”. However, it is clear that Google’s new criteria for punishing highly optimized sites is not across the board, but for only major terms that are likely to be manipulated.

Because of their Toolbar, their search results, and Google AdWords, Google has a comprehensive list of commercial terms that are most often searched for. When you couple that information with the amount of money they are willing to pay per click through AdWords, Google has a gold mine of information.

With the above in mind, we have come to the following conclusions:

  • As we reported earlier, Google is trying to force webmasters to use AdWords. By removing them from the SERPs just before the holiday shopping rush starts online, this forces them to use AdWords or be out.
  • It has been stated that Google is trying to separate their results into non-commercial and commercial. Commercial results will be AdWords and non-commercial the natural listings, primarily used for research purposes. While many search results look as if this is what is occuring, it is highly unlikely that the search algorithm is that good to determine what is a commercial or non-commercial site. If Google does this, all webmasters need to do is setup an “information only” site with links to their commercial site.
  • Google has added anti-SEO technology which effects frequently searched and frequently optimized for keyword phrases. Whenever a user enters such a keyword phrase into Google, this technology drops pages that were overly optimized from the results.

What You Should Do
Your overall strategy should be encompassing everything we have suggested over the years. However, if you have had a signifcant drop in the rankings, the following is highly recommended:

  • Slightly “de-optimize” your sites. If you have full control over any links, you should redo the anchor text and remove the keyword phrase from the anchor text, and instead, work it into the body text surrounding the anchor text and place the keyword phrase in the Title of that page, but only if it makes logical sense to do so. This will help you with the current algorithm, but remember it can change again in the future.
  • If you have many sites that you control, separate them into subgroups, and if they are on the same server, now is the time to get a new server with a different IP block.
  • Do a keyword density analysis on the top ten sites that appear in the SERPs and then model your site after those results.

Conclusion:

Despite all the growing theories about this update, there is no great conspiracy theory. Google is attempting to redress the balance by trying to eradicate obvious search engine manipulation from their most competitive results. It is clear that the new algorithm is not doing this properly, but as it occurred last year, they made a major patch to their update the day after Thanksgiving. With the number of datacenters that have been cycled through daily, it is clear that Google is retooling this algorithm. If they do follow the same pattern as last year, we should see a revised update go live on the system by noon Pacific time tomorrow.

Google Update Florida

Google just updated their PageRank and backlink information over the past few days. Their index has been very unstable as of late, and I wanted to wait to report the new results to you when the index was more stable. This update comes after the major change in Google’s criteria that they introduced about ten days ago.

I am seeing inconsistent results, datacenters being swapped in and out throughout the day, and pages that are full of spamming techniques are ranking near the top of the SERPs. Last year at this time, Google also changed their criteria and their search results were very unstable. However, that changed just after Thanksgiving. Hang tight, as the search results should settle down over the next ten days.

Conspiracy Theory?
It has been suggested that Google’s new criteria was introduced for the sole purpose of increasing their ad revenue from Google Ad Words for the upcoming holiday season. With the number of message board postings, PDF files, and Spam pages appearing in the top ten of the SERPs, there could be truth behind this latest rumor.

Google Update: Florida
Because Webmaster World held “PubCon” in Orlando, this Google update has been dubbed “Update Florida”. I also wanted to discuss another important aspect in regards to Google’s new criteria. It is “Page Saturation” – how many pages your site has in Google’s index. Keep tabs on the number of pages indexed at least on a weekly basis and the number should be going up every 30 days. Yes, there will be times Google will “purge” their index, but overall, you should see an upward trend.

Search Engine Update Pt.2

Google Algo Change
Just after my newsletter was released on Friday, Google changed their algorithm and the testing that I had done on their secondary servers seemed to be what they switched to. There were huge drops and huge gains across the board.

There is no need to panic if your search results took a huge dip. Remember that in search engine marketing, the one consistent aspect is there is going to be change. By following my advise and having an overall strategy, your site should be able to withstand the changes.

Keep these numbers in mind when doing your marketing so you hit the search engines with the biggest market reach, which is Google.

Search Engine Update Pt. 1

Google & Microsoft Issue
Rumors have swirled about Microsoft’s intent of buying Google. While the press has reported that Google has denied they will accept an offer from Microsoft, sources close to me state that Google is very much involved in talks with Microsoft.

So, what of the statement from Microsoft a few months ago that they were targeting Google and would take their market share?

That statement was very much true and Microsoft increased their staff on their search engine team by ten fold. They were set on building their own search function and aggressively going after Google. However, in their testing phase, they hit a wall. Speed. They could not rival Google’s accuracy and speed.

Realizing that they could not compete with Google, Microsoft is trying to do what they do best: acquire the technology they cannot develop themselves. If talks go well, analysts feel that when Microsoft drops LookSmart in January, MSN will begin to display Google results. In February when Google hits the street with their IPO a buyout could be reached shortly thereafter. If a buyout does not occur, a long-term agreement would be made to allow Google to continue to supply results to MSN.

What You Should Do Within 30 Days
As we have mentioned before, you should start to reduce your spending at LookSmart. LookSmart has begun an aggressive marketing campaign to keep their business, but their model will not be able to support their user base without MSN. Jump ship and transfer your advertising budget allocated to LookSmart to Overture. I am still highly recommending Overture over Google AdWords as your conversions and cost per sale are lower with Overture.

Increase both your Link Popularity and Link Reputation aggressively, but keep the “White Hat” on and do so ethically. These off-page factors are critical to the scoring with Google, but there are penalties involved (see below). As Yahoo! prepares to switch away from Google, if the analysts are correct, and Google wins the MSN account, Google will remain the dominant search result provider online.

Google Toolbar/Search Result Inconsistency
You have probably seen the PageRank bar greyed out on many sites lately on the Google Toolbar, and even some inconsistencies with the search results over the last few days. According to the results of our test servers, Google is again testing new algo.

We have noticed the following:

  • less importance on the keyword tag in the Title of the page
  • rankings lowered on sites that use the exact keyword phrase in the Title
  • penalty for “too much” relevancy for specific keyword phrases
  • penalty given for sites that have a keyword phrase in the Title and Anchor Text of incoming links
  • bonus given if the keyword phrase appears in the Title of the page of the incoming link

Inktomi Tips
As we are nearly the year anniversary when Yahoo! purchased Inktomi, I am recommending now, more than ever, to increase your website’s visibility in the Inktomi database. Here are the primary strategies that are the most effective for Inktomi.

  • Place keyword(s) in the Title – the earlier within the title tag, the better
  • Place keyword(s) within the header tags –

    ,

    ,

    , etc.

  • Place your keyword(s) in bold text and scatter them throughout the page, especially contained inside paragraphs of body text
  • Place keywords within file names (web page names)
  • Use keywords as third level domains
  • Place keywords in outgoing/incoming links – bold links work well
  • Review your site map and use bold text around the links that have keywords in them. Inktomi likes site maps

Inktomi likes the tag and responds favorably to frequent use of the keyword scattered throughout different areas of the page. Give these tips a try and you’ll probably notice your rankings improve.

KWMap.com Spam
Your Inbox has probably been hit with an offer from KWMap.com to trade links with your site and give your site great visibility in their new directory. Don’t buy into it. They launched a massive Spamming campaign and are already apart of many blacklists. Their strong Alexa ranking is due to their email blasts. Google is known to penalize sites that link to “bad neighborhoods”. This is one.
