Google Update Complete

We were wrong in our earlier statement that the update would not occur for some time as the update went live just about an hour ago. As Google has now gone to a “continuous update” there is no longer a “Google Dance” where we have a period of time between the start of the update and the update going live on the server. It is live now.

There were some major changes in the algorithm, and we are testing those right now. From looking at the raw data thus far, it looks like anchor text is being given lesser weight and link popularity from solid sites is being given more weight.

As this is the first update since Google went to the continuous update there will be some instability in the next few days or weeks.

I will keep you informed as changes occur.

Google Algorithm Change

Google Change: This morning you may have noticed a big change in Google for your two-word keyword phrases. Google has reverted back to an old datacenter about 2-3 months old for these results. However, 1, 3, and 4+ keyword phrases are virtually unchanged from yesterday.

This is not Everflux (Google’s continuous monthly update) as it has a different feel and the results are never “stale” in Everflux.

This message is to alert you to the change and also to let you know that our staff is researching the issue and will report back when an answer is found. In the meantime, if your site’s listings have dropped, or if your site has been dropped completely by Google, don’t panic. This could work itself out in a day or two, or we could discover a new change in Google which would allow you to make the necessary changes in your strategy now.

Google Update?

Note: It has now been seven weeks since the last “Google Dance” and according to industry insiders, Google is not only going to a “continuous update”, but they will only update the number of backlinks and PageRank each time they perform a major enhancement to their algorithm. This is estimated to be once per quarter.

What This Means: Currently, most sites receive a “deep crawl”, meaning Google indexes beyond the first level of the site, twice per month. However, with this new “continuous update”, we have seen Google “deep crawl” sites 2-3 times per week. The exception to this are sites that have only been in the Google index less than 90 days. Those sites are generally being ignored right now by Google as they look to make the necessary adjustments to hold off Yahoo! and MSN.

Remember that Google has many datacenters, and it takes time for your pages to be listed in all of the datacenters. With the continous update, if your site has a PageRank of 5/10 or higher, you will notice that your new pages are included in the index in three days or less, and your changed content is available in less than seven days.

ODP: The ODP made some major system upgrades in July and it is hoped now the editors have what they need to get through the huge backlog of submissions in the system. If you have outstanding ODP submissions, check in about two weeks to see if they have been included.

Google AdSense: If you have heard of Google AdSense, I am preparing a detailed article on the process to help your site receive acceptance from Google’s editors.
